Blue-black Grosbeak

The Blue-black Grosbeak (Cyanocompsa cyanoides) is found from South Mexico to West Ecuador, North Bolivia, and Amazonian Brazil. Its natural habits are understory of humid forest, dark ravines, tall second growth, and shady semi-open forests. Adults are 16 cm (6 inches) in height and 32 g in weight.

Blue-black body, blacker on wings, tail, and lores. With brighter blue forehead and legs and bill black. Youngers have throat paler, tonged with cinnamon and often mottled with dusky. It eats a variety of fruits and seeds, and insects like beetles and roaches.

Blue Grosbeak

The Blue Grosbeak (Passerina caerulea) breeds from South and Central United States to Costa Rica. Frequents agricultural areas with scattered trees and hedgerows, second growth, open woodland, and dry, thorny scrub. It has a cinnamon, buffy, or rufous wings bars distinguish males from the other blue birds.

Adults are mostly bright violet blue, with lores black, and feathers on crissum tipped with whitish. Wings and tail black with blue endings. Upper mandible black, lower silvery, and legs dusky. They feed on little insects.
