Swallow-tailed Kite

The Swallow-tailed Kite (Elanoides forficatus) breeds from southeast USA to east Peru and north Argentina. It lives in hilly or mountainous terrain with at least scattered remnants of humid forest. It is 58 cm (23 inches) heights and 480 g weights.

In adults the head, underparts, and wing linings are white. Its mantle and flight feathers are black. Youngers are similar, but head and chest are lightly streaked with dusky, and back is spotted with white. It feeds on insects, birds, lizards and snakes.

The Creasted Eagle (Morphnus guianensis) is a large, broad and round winged, long tailed eagle. It has a full pointed crest. Dwells from N Guatemala to Bolivia, NE Argentina and SE Brazil.

81cm (32”), 3kg. Bill and feet small. Variable. Above slate-black to brownish-black; wing coverts may be scaled with whitish; wings and tail bellow light gray, boldly banded with black. Pale phase: crest black; head, neck and chest pale grayish; rest of underparts white barred with cinnamon to pale rufous. Dark phase: head, neck and chest gray to barred with blackish, or entirely blackish. Iris brown; cere and lore blackish, feet yellow. Young ones are mostly white; mantle gray mottled with blackish; narrower black bands in below flight feathers than an adult.

The Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) is among the most powerful raptors in the world.  It dwells from SE Mexico to N Argentina and SE Brazil. Feeds mostly of monkeys and sloths. Uses its heavy powerful feet to lift the prey; they have the largest talons of any living eagle.

Head and neck light gray; broad and divided occipital crest; mantle, wing-linings and broad chest-band black; below white, barred with black on thighs, flanks and crissum; wings and tail above black, below gray, boldly banded with black (4 black tail bands). The Black-Faced Grosbeak (Caryothraustes poliogaster) lives from South-eastern Mexico to Eastern Panama. They inhabit in the Caribbean slopes, at 1000 meters above sea, in shrubs or trees. Its measures are 16 cm (6 inches) in height and 30 g in weight.

Adults have a head, neck and breast, the rump and belly are gray. Bill black, and back, wings and tail olive. This bird lives in flocks of 20 and feeds on seeds, nectar of flowers and insects like beetles, and caterpillars.

Black-thighed Grosbeak

The Black-thighed Grosbeak (Pheucticus tibialis) inhabits in Costa Rica and Panama. It is seen in highlands; in canopy and edges if mountains forests, pastures with scattered tall trees, and old second growth. Its measures are of 20 cm (8 inches) in height and 70 g in weight.

This is a large bird, with very heavy bill, with part of the head, neck and breast glossy yellow-ochre. Underparts bright yellow; back feathers black, edged with yellowish-olive, and legs gray. This animal feeds on fruits, seeds, and insects.

The Rose-breasted Grosbeak (Pheuticus ludovicianus) breeds in North America and winters from Mexico to Venezuela and Peru. In winter frequents open woods, semi-open, forest edge, scattered trees in clearings, gardens and plantations. This little bird is 18 cm (7 inches) in height and 45 g in weight.

Adults have upperparts black, feathers of rump white, tipped with black and brown. Most of underparts are white, throat and breast rose-red mixed with brown. In breeding season, its head, throat and back are black, its breast and center of upper belly rose-red, and its rump and rest of upperparts are white. Its diet is based on berries, palm fruits, arillate and other seeds.

The Black-Cheeked Ant-Tanager (Habia atrimaxillaris) is an endemic species of Costa Rica. Lives in the lowlands of Golfo Dulce, Península de Osa, and Corcovado National Park. Its size is of 18 cm (7 inches) in height and 38 g in weight.

With front and sides of crown black with slaty feather tips, and a central crown-path bright salmon-orange. Rest of upperparts dark gray, tinged with dull redish. Bill black, and legs dark horn. Its diet is based on small insects, leaves, and berries of melastomes.

Lives in thicket growth along forests edges, in banks of streams and rivers, plantations, and shady second growth. Its measures are 19 cm (7 inches) in height and 40 g in weight.

With the center of the crown bright red, rest of upperparts dark dusky-red, shading to bright scarlet on throat. Bill blackish and legs dusky to gray. It feeds on insects and fruits.

Matures have a crown path pinkish-scarlet, bordered with redish-black. Rest of the upperparts, wings, and tail are dusky-red. Underparts paler dull red, brightest on throat. Bill black, and legs brownish-gray. This bird feeds on fruits and beetles.
