Purple-throated Fruitcrow
The Purple-throated Fruitcrow (Querula purpurata) ranges from Costa Rica to West Ecuador, North Bolivia, and Amazonian Brazil. They inhabit in groups of 5-8 in lowlands of wet forests and foothills. Its measures are 28 cm (11 inches) in height and 115g in weight.
This fairy large bird has an entirely black plumage. Bill silver-gray and legs black. This bird suns itself with wings spread like a vulture. Is diet is based on fruits and insects.
Rock Pigeon
The Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) is native to Eurasia and North Africa and nowadays lives worldwide. This is the common pigeon of cities and towns, usually in flocks. Its size is 30 cm (12 inches) and its weight 300 g.
This bird has a highly variety plumage but mostly dark gray, glossed with purple and green on the neck. Wings are gray and, bill black, cere whitish and legs magenta. This urban bird feeds on seeds and scraps in streets and plazas.
Pale-vented Pigeon
The Pale-vented Pigeon (Patagioenas cayennensis) lives from the Southside of Mexico to the Southwest part of Ecuador and the North part of Argentina. They live in humid lowlands of the Caribbean and Pacific Coast. Alone or in small groups, this vertebrate reside in closed forest, in coconut palm plantations, mangroves and in river margins.
Characterized by its pale crissum, with whitish throat, slate-gray head and its bill and cere black. This bird feeds on berries of trees and shrubs like Trema and Melastomes.
Scaled Pigeon
The Scaled Pigeon (Patagioenas speciosa) lives from the Southside Mexico to West Ecuador, North Argentina and the Southeast part of Brazil. Its place is in forested regions. Its size is of 32 cm (12 inches) and 320 g in weight.
This large bird is characterized by its reddish scaled plumage. Adults have a crown and most of upperparts rufous-to purplish-chestnut. Neck, breast, and upper back rich buff to whitish. Bill bright red whit white tip. It feeds on fruits and epiphytes. Seen singly, in pairs or trios.
Maguari stork
The Maguari Stork (Ciconia maguari) has an extensive range in South America. It is found in wetlands, savannas and agricultural lands in the lowlands east of the Andes. This bird visits Centro America since 2013 when a group of them arrived Costa Rica’s Gulf of Nicoya. Its size is between 97 and 120 cm.
The biggest part of the adult plumage is white, with black flight feathers, and a blacked tail. This stork has the occurrence of dark plumage in the young. Maguari Storks are carnivorous, eating a wide range of small vertebrates and invertebrates.
Southern Lapwing
This bird (Vanellus chilensis) was only in South America but it has been spreading through Central America in recent years. The Southern lapwing is the national bird of Uruguay. Its size is 31 cm (12 inches) and the weight is 300g.
Some features are its gray-crested head and black breast, the upperparts are mainly brownish grey, with a bronze glossing on the shoulders, the underparts are white, and the eye ring, legs and most of the bill are pink. In our country you can find them in both coasts in short grass areas, usually near water. They live in partners or in smalls groups and its sing is loud.
