Indigo Bunting

The Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea) breeds in South East Canada and in East and Central United States. In winters it is found from Mexico to Colombia, in weedy fields, savanna edges, low second growth and semi-open forests. Adults are 12 cm (4 inches) in height and 13.5 g in weight.

This small bird in winters in above tawny-brown, bellow buffy-brown, shading to white on belly. Shoulders and underparts are more or less mixed with blue. In breeding season this bird is deep blue, above greenish, and tinged with violet in head and breast. It feeds on small insects, berries and seeds.
